Well you can look at earlier forms of this kanji on Wikipedia and other sites. It was just supposed to depict a big spoon originally. Over time kanji forms get refined/simplified, and meanings transform. Though the meaning here is still pretty much the original one, just that people have started imagining a big spoon in the sky apparently. When?
