人 readings

Hello! I was wondering what the difference is between when 人 【ジン】and 人口 【ジンコウ】would be used? I'm a bit confused.Thank you so much in advance!! -^

If you look it up it already says so, but 人 【ジン】 is a suffix, not a standalone word. For example you can put it at the end of 日本 (Japan, the country) to form the word 日本人 (Japanese, a person/human).

And 人口 【ジンコウ】 is a noun. Its meaning is "population", as in the people living inside a certain area.

Other than these two, there are of course many other words that use the Chinese character 人 when you write them down, as it is one of the more common kanji used in Japanese. But you should look at each word individually and consider them separate from each other.

Certainly! In Japanese, "人" (pronounced as "jin") means "person" or "people," referring to individuals. On the other hand, "人口" (pronounced as "jinkou") means "population," referring to the total number of people in a specific area or country. So, while "人" is about individuals, "人口" is about the collective population. I hope this clarifies the difference for you!
