It seems to be intentional. It's in the entry, but not as visible information. On the edict entry 侯補 is marked as "sK" which is "search-only kanji form."

My guess is people who are looking for 候補 mistakenly search for 侯補 enough that they were trying to help those people find it.

Incorrect search result for 侯
I was trying to look up what words contain the kanji 侯, but when I search for just "侯" the second result is 候補. That contains the similar but different kanji 候, and 侯 is not present anywhere in that entry.
