This is a discussion about 画線法

Better Translation

I found another word 正の字 for "tally marks". Which is more common?

画線法 is a general term for the concept of tallying. I don't think it's all that well known of a term. Seeing as I've never seen a Japanese person tally in any other way besides 正の字, that would be the best known thing to them. However, for obvious reasons, you could not use 正の字 to talk about other forms of tallying.

I'm not sure what you meant by better translation... both items have entries here and I think both entries cover the meanings well enough.
