ペラペラ's Etymology?

What is Pera-Pera's etymology. And also the fact it is written in Katakana.
The closest I can link it is 'Peri-Peri', which is a chili!

ぺら can be used to indicate licking something... it is a mimetic word.

ぺらぺら is smooth or, for language, fluent. ぺらby itself can describe something thin/silky like fabric or smooth, very thin paper.
