My experience is that it's fairly commonly used and known.

As the definition points out, it's a linguistics term, so it's used a lot in schools when talking about vocabulary tests and such. In english, when you can't think of a word, you don't say you can't think of the vocab for it, you'd can say the word for it. So in common out of school conversation, it might not come up, but it's a pretty common word in my experience.

Is 単語 much used within Japanese conversation?
I've never heard of it and I thought to myself: 'Maybe, this is another one of these words that is an official word, but isn't used that often.' Am I right in thinking this?
